The first celebrity cook of Pakistan Zubaida Tariq Ilyas, who was very popular for her totkas (household tricks) passed away on Thursday, January 4, in Karachi due to heart failure in the midnight. Reputable chef Zubaida Tariq knownas Zubaida Apa was also suffering with Parkinson disease. In 2011 she published “Living with Parkinson’s” day-to-day memoir.
Zubaida Tariqwas born on April 4, 1945, in Hyderabad Deccan, British India. Tariq was born into a protuberant family of highbrows and artists. She started working in her 50’s.The reason to start cooking after her marriage was because her husband Tariq Maqsood would conduct grand dinner parties. After receiving a lot of appreciation from guests, Tariq started cooking as a profession. She started her career as food advisory service in a company. After that she joined a spice company where she shared her recipes with different variations and her own created spice.
Tariq wrote many cookbooks and also conducted cooking shows for different TV channels which hit the screens. She inclined as a first celebrity cook of Pakistan afterward. Her daily household advice (totkay) on numerous TV channels were so popular that she recognized as “Zubaida Apa totkay wali”.
Tariq was well recognized for her styling. She used to wear traditional sarees with matching bangles and other jewelry items. Her fashion sense appeals to her fans.
Her list of siblings consists of many renowned personalities of Pakistan. Play writer Fatima Surayya Bajiya, actor and writer Anwar Maqsood, former chief secretory of Sindh, Ahmed Maqsood, Poet Zehra Nigah, Fashion designer Sughra Kazmi are her siblings. Dalda ka Dastarkhawan, Aik Mukammal Ghar, Kitchen Magic, Aaj Ke Bhao and Handi were popular cooking shows of TV and FM conducted by late Tariq.
