The much anticipated and controversial American comedy film ‘The Interview‘ is finally released online. Despite all threats and a lot of speculations, Sony finally released the movie online on 25th December. The film is available for online streaming, both rentals and purchases, on Youtube, Google Play, Xbox and a lot of other video-on-demand (VOD) platforms.
The film received a lot of criticism for its portrayal a negative image of Kim Jong-un, the Supreme Leader of North Korea. The filmmakers and distributors received threats to stop its release. The film was originally scheduled to be released in June, 2014.
Sony Pictures Entertainment website was hacked by the Guardians of Peace, a hacker group. A number of Sony’s upcoming movies and other private information was compromised. The group demanded Sony to pull out the release of the movie referring it as “the movie of terrorism”.
“It was essential for our studio to release this movie, especially given the assault upon our business and our employees by those who wanted to stop free speech,” Sony Entertainment chief executive Michael Lynton said in a statement.
“We chose the path of digital distribution first so as to reach as many people as possible on opening day, and we continue to seek other partners and platforms to further expand the release.”
Threats of terrorist attacks were also given to cinemas who would show the film.
Despite all the stir, Sony has somehow managed to release The Interview.
